What Homeowners Need to Do After a Flood

Water Extraction Services Tips

Every professional

water extraction services

will advise homeowners to disconnect the power, unplug any electrical devices and remove furniture and other such items immediately. The faster you remove all items out of harm’s way, the more likely you will be able to save them. The first thing will be electrical, and when possible, switch off all the power feeding the affected area, this is paramount when you think the water will rise above any electrical outlets.

Remove when possible all carpets and area rugs, in addition to their underpadding. There could be a possibility of you saving them if you get them cleaned and disinfected fast enough, however, some may shrink. It will be very unlikely you can save the underpadding, as this does act like a sponge and absorbs a great deal of the water.

Remove all the excess water, this can be done in several different ways. When you do not have power or are worried about any loose wires, then you will need to go old school and manually remove the water. This can be done using towels, mops, and buckets which will soak up as much water as possible. So long as the sewers in your

neighborhood are not backed up, pour the water down the drain, however, should this not be possible then pour it onto your lawn or any other permeable area.

If you have access to a wet/dry vacuum then use it, however, please note, you have to be extremely careful when plugging it into any outlets that are close to the area affected. Never, use an extension cord for a connection, as this could short out and give you a nasty electrical shock. Water and electricity never mix well! Should the flood be in your basement and it is too much for you to handle manually, and should you have power, then you need to seriously consider renting a sump pump. Removing all the excess water and drying the area out is your main concern, as this will prevent mold and mildew from growing.
